Publication Database
Publication databases are resources that catalog journal articles, books or other publications. Some well-known examples of publication databases are MEDLINE and the catalog of the US Library of Congress.
Contents
Publication databases generally consist of references to publications, not the publications themselves. References may follow a standard format that lists the title, authors, journal title or book publisher, and other pertinent information. Some databases provide a topic or keyword system to classify references.
Access to Publications
Access to the actual publications depends on their location and availability. Some may be available only in print, and would need to be ordered from a library or bookseller. Many journal articles are available electronically, and can be viewed or downloaded over the Internet. However, the cost of electronically available resources is variable - while a number of free, full-text articles can be found, many high-quality peer-reviewed articles are reserved for paid access. The cost of these proprietary articles can be prohibitive to individual users.
