About CRPN

The Cleveland Regional Perinatal Network, established in 1975 through a grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, is now funded by the Ohio Department of Health, Bureau of Child and Family Health Services.  The CRPN monitors outcomes, increases professional and consumer knowledge, serves as a regional planner, and facilitates quality improvement initiatives regarding maternal infant health.

The CRPN serves Perinatal Region V along general maternal and infant transport lines, which cover the counties of Ashtabula, Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, and Lorain.  The activities reach all of the maternity hospitals, health departments and numerous health and human service agencies serving the region.

The CRPN welcomes questions regarding perinatal medical, nursing, or  psychosocial  issues.  The Project Director can be E-mailed at crpn@uhhospitals.org or call (216) 844-3391.

Regional Reports  on Perinatal Outcomes, Hospital Performance and Birth Data Quality Improvements

The Regional Perinatal Center Program has three main objectives and they are: (1) to monitor outcomes and performance within perinatal regions and regional perinatal health care systems; (2) to increase professional and consumer knowledge regarding data and related quality improvement interventions; (3) and to serve as a regional planner facilitating the improvement of a seamless, community based perinatal system that serves all pregnant women and newborns.

As a recipient of the 2008 Regional Perinatal Center Program (RPC) grant, the Cleveland Regional Perinatal Network (CRPN) is required by the Ohio Department of Health (Division of Family and Community Health Services, Bureau of Child and Family Health Services) to submit a Performance and Outcome Measures Report by December 31, 2007. This first report serves two purposes: to identify areas needing improvement in Perinatal Region V by comparing the region to state and national performance measures; and to establish baseline data of county and regional performance measures to guide programmatic efforts and monitor future improvements.

The report is found as three files in GreaterCleveland.localhealth.info. Each item is linked and can be easily accessed:

DUC - Data Use Consortium

The Cleveland Regional Perinatal Network Data Use Consortium (CRPN-DUC) provides access to regional perinatal outcome data for Perinatal Region V, which encompasses Ashtabula, Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake and Lorain counties. Agencies participating in the DUC include University Hospitals of Cleveland, MetroHealth Medical Center, the Visiting Nurse Association, the Cuyahoga County Board of Health, the City of Cleveland Department of Health, MomsFirst, Elyria City Health District, Lake County General Health District, Geauga County General Health District, Family Planning Association of Northeast Ohio, Lorain County General Health District and the Ashtabula County General Health District.

DUC uses official birth and death records of infants (deaths occurring within 365 days of birth) provided by the Ohio Department of Health to perform analyses on fetal and infant mortality rates for counties in Perinatal Region V using the Perinatal Periods of Risk Model (PPOR). These analyses are useful in determining disparities among fetal and infant deaths that are registered with the Ohio Department of Health.

DUC members work with the Ohio Bureau of Vital Statistics in Columbus to provide education and training to agencies involved in completing birth and death certificates. Accurate completion of these forms is crucial to gain better insights into factors associated with feto-infant mortality.
